The German and Austrian citizens were not evil people. The Wehrmacht was not made up of evil people. Worst of all, they were not led by evil people. They were led by perfectly ordinary human beings.

And I think a lot of fantasy stories fail to take things like that into account and are all the poorer for it. 

Why i liked avatar: the last airbender so much was that you had people on the wrong side in the show, who were not truly bad people. even the baddest bad guy in the show used to be friends with the avatar, and had good in him. and katara did bloodbending, which is pretty evil. she did it, even if she felt badly afterwards. 

strictly defining good and evil is a cop-out, imo.
